Mission: In late 2009 the Louisiana State Government cut Food Bank financing by 4.5 million dollars. As a small food pantry this blog was created to spotlight our community and show the direct effects from such a harsh budget cut.

We work at the Community Center of St Bernard, a food pantry and Community Center 10 minutes outside of New Orleans. We feed around 70 families a day and the number of new people we serve keeps growing. The spiraling economy coupled with the state budget cut to Second Harvest has created empty shelves for needy families.

More people + less food = a big problem.

Food For Our Neighbors Archives

    February 26, 2010

As part of Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign is an initiative to end ‘Food Deserts’ throughout America in 7 years. Food Deserts are basically any community or town across America that doesn’t have easy access to a supermarket, keeping families from buying fresh produce and other healthy foods.

After watching this video I couldn’t help but think about St Bernard. I’ve worked here for 8 months now and I still have trouble finding a healthy place to eat lunch. Even though St Bernard cuisine is delicious (Fried Shrimp Po-Boys and Muffulettas…) it is far from healthy. To make matters worse, since the food bank budget cuts we have been getting more and more unhealthy foods donated to us, and because we barely have anything to give them in the first place a considerable amount of the food we give out is cakes, donuts, cupcakes, and other desserts.

Money is needed to bring nutritious foods into a community either through a supermarket or a food pantry. Do you think St Bernard is a Food Desert?
